Michael Coleman is the CEO of the Montgomery Area Food Bank (MAFB), which is the largest food bank in Alabama, serving 35 counties in Alabama where over 27 million pounds of food were distributed this past year. He was born and raised in Greenville, Alabama and previously served 21 years in the United States Army as a communications officer. He retired from active duty in June 2005.
Michael founded Hope Inspired Ministries, in Montgomery, AL, in 2012, and served seven years as its Executive Director. which is a non-profit dedicated to empowering men and women with barriers to employment.
Before coming to the Montgomery Area Food Bank, Michael served as the Executive Director of the Jimmie Hale Mission in Birmingham, AL, which is an addiction recovery program focused on homeless men, women, and children.
Michael is a proud Rotarian in the Montgomery Sunrise Club and a three-time Paul Harris awardee. He currently serves on the J.F. Ingram Community College Advisory Board and regularly speaks to community groups associated with combating the issues relating to poverty.
He does a weekly radio show called Mission Minded on the Tony Kurre Network, where he discusses all issues relating to nonprofit and organizational leadership. Michael was recently selected as one of the Top 20 Most Dynamic CEOs of 2023 by The CEO Publication.
Michael has a B.S. in Management and a M.S. in Christian Ministry. He has been married for 39 years and has two daughters and four grandchildren.
About the Montgomery Area Food Bank:
The Montgomery Area Food Bank (MAFB) was established in 1986 through the efforts of the local United Way Community Council and under the umbrella of the American Red Cross. At that time, MAFB’s 10,000-square-foot facility distributed roughly two million pounds of food annually throughout four counties in Alabama. The organization became a certified affiliate of Feeding America (previously known as America’s Second Harvest) in 1989.
MAFB is one of 200 food banks across the nation that sources, acquires, and distributes healthy and nutritious food to those experiencing hunger and food insecurity. MAFB is contracted with Feeding America to combat hunger and food insecurity in 35 Alabama counties. They do this in partnership with four affiliated food banks in Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Dothan, and Selma. However, MAFB serves 12 of the 35 counties directly out of its facility in Montgomery.
The state of Alabama has over 700,000 of its citizens who battle daily with hunger and food insecurity. In response, last year MAFB distributed over 27 million pounds of food equating to over 22.4 million meals. We especially target our hunger initiatives toward veterans, seniors, children, families, and college students.
Today, MAFB maintains a staff of over 50 men and women who strive to cultivate a community where everyone has access to quality, safe, nutritious food and is committed to creating a healthy, hunger-free environment for families, seniors, and children. MAFB is not only looking to address the devastating conditions of hunger and food insecurity, but we also are working to begin initiatives that directly address the underlying causes of generational poverty. Through these efforts, we will empower those who can be lifted up out of poverty and provide the resources needed for themselves and their families.
