SUMMARY:3 April Speaker: Wade Lyles\, Director of Montgomery's Emergency Management Agency
DESCRIPTION:Join us this week as we hear from Montgomery’s EMA Director Wade Lyles. \nMost emergencies or disasters are handled at the local level without state or federal assistance and\, although the Montgomery City/County EMA is best known for its severe weather assistance and preparedness programs\, emergency management is so much more. An emergency management program examines potential emergencies and disasters based on the risks posed by likely hazards; develops and implements programs aimed toward reducing the impact of these events on the community; prepares for those risks that cannot be eliminated; and prescribes the actions required to deal with the consequences and the recovery from those events when they occur. \nThe mission of the Montgomery City/County EMA is to serve the residents of Montgomery through effective planning to minimize the effects of all disasters. EMA manages and coordinates efforts toward a rapid recovery from disasters and is committed to effective actions to prevent the disasters we can and to reduce the impact of those over which we have no control.

SUMMARY:13 March Speaker: Katie Jeter with Children First
DESCRIPTION:Children First is a non-profit\, non-partisan diverse group of statewide leaders who serve as the driving force to shape public policy and enhance the quality of life for the children and families of Alabama. \nThe organization is a combination of two entities\, the Children First Alliance of Alabama and Children First Foundation.  Both are non-profits that work to improve the overall well-being of Alabama’s children through Advocacy\, with policymakers and political leaders; Awareness\, to bring children’s needs and issues to the attention of Alabama’s policymakers\, political leaders and citizens\, and to promote the universally accepted concept of prevention; and Accountability\, to serve as a watchdog over children’s programs and services and over policymakers on children’s issues. \nThe Foundation primarily does lobbying work for children and the Alliance performs non-lobbying duties of the organization. \nThe primary focus is and always has been providing for children at the statehouse what all other special interests have: a lobbyist that speaks for them in an environment where they have no voice.

SUMMARY:20 February Speaker: Josh Johnson\, WSFA Chief Meteorologist
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker this week is Josh Johnson\, Chief Meteorologist with WSFA. Some of you may recall his previous visit to our Club several years ago. It was entertaining and informative. I think we can expect the same Thursday. He says he likes to have a conversation with the audience. So come prepared to ask him your questions\, i.e.\, “When will we see the end of cold weather?” His bio appears below. \nJosh Johnson is WSFA’s Chief Meteorologist. Inspired by the Blizzard of ’93\, Hurricane Opal and numerous tornado events\, Josh went to Mississippi State University (MSU) to earn his degree in meteorology. \nWhile at MSU\, Josh started doing TV weather at the age of 19\, working as a weekend meteorologist at WTOK-TV in Meridian\, MS. An internship in Birmingham sharpened his desire to serve others in meteorology. Soon after graduation\, Josh was named Chief Meteorologist at WTOK. \nIn March 2007\, Josh moved to Atlanta and joined the team at 11Alive (NBC). After a short time there\, he accepted the Morning Meteorologist position at WSFA 12 News\, a role he held for almost seven years. \nIn April 2015\, Josh was promoted to Chief Meteorologist at WSFA 12 News. As chief meteorologist\, Josh has led the weather team in accurately forecasting numerous tornado events\, winter storms and tropical weather systems. SUMMARY:13 February Speaker: Darryl Hood\, WAKA News Anchor
DESCRIPTION:Our second speaker during “media month” is Darryl Hood\, news anchor at WAKA. His bio appears below. \n“Darryl Hood joined WAKA as weeknight news anchor in October 2014 and anchors Action 8 News weeknights at 6 & 10PM. \nDarryl is an accomplished award-winning broadcast journalist with nearly two decades of experience as a news anchor and reporter. \nDarryl had known from the age of 16 he wanted a career in television news. With the support of his family\, friends and the guidance of several mentors\, Darryl was able to fulfill his dream of becoming part of a business that gives him a front row seat to history-making events. \nDarryl began his career as a reporter for the Orange County Newschannel (OCN) in Orange County\, California\, prior to graduating from California State University Northridge. \nFrom OCN\, he was hired as weekend anchor/reporter for KQTV in St. Joseph\, Missouri. He later took a gamble on Las Vegas\, where he spent five years as an anchor and reporter. Following his stint in Sin City\, he was given the opportunity to report for his dream station\, KCAL-TV in Los Angeles\, which also afforded him the opportunity to report for KCAL’s sister station KCBS-TV. \nDarryl then went on to report for KCNC-TV in Denver\, Colorado\, and later headed back to Los Angeles to anchor the Emmy Award-winning weekly newsmagazine “LA This Week” for LA CityView Channel 35. \nDarryl has also worked for stations in Memphis\, Tennessee\, and Columbia\, South Carolina. \nWhen he’s not working\, Darryl enjoys traveling\, salsa dancing and hanging out with friends. He’s always discovering and soaking up all the River Region has to offer and meeting many of you and telling your stories along the way.” \nLast week’s presentation dealt with print media and the challenges it faces to remain relevant and viable as a business. Mr. Hood may share some of the same challenges as a mainstream local TV anchor. There are so many options for getting the news nowadays thanks to the internet. Let’s support local media for keeping us informed about issues that are close to us and where we can make ourselves heard and influence outcomes.

SUMMARY:13 June Speaker: Dewayne Rembert\, Lead Pastor of Flatline Church at Chisholm
DESCRIPTION:Join us this week as we hear from Dewayne Rembert\, Lead Pastor of the Flatline Church. \nMore about Dewayne: \nDewayne was born on February 21\, 1975 and is a native of Linden\, AL. He is married to his best friend of 20 years\, Leslie\, and they are proud parents of three children: Devin\, Dorian\, and Journi. His corporate background consists of being the General Manager of one of Hilton Hotels brand hotels. Dewayne has received a Biblical Diploma from Samford University M.T.I. Program. He’s also finishing up his theological training at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Dewayne had attended church with his grandmother as a child\, but stopped attending after his grandmother’s health prevented her from going. He has confessed that even though he attended church\, he never “heard” the gospel message. He first believed the gospel message as an adult when he attended church after his boss at the time invited him. He then served there as a deacon for six years and youth pastor for seven years. During that time he was led to leave the corporate world and start Flatline Movement. Flatline is derived from Romans 6:11 which says\, “ So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” Flatline is a combination of gospel artists\, weekly mentoring and an AAU high school basketball team (currently off for now due to scheduling). He was Strong Tower at Washington Park’s first youth pastor where he developed their youth program which is known as iENGauge. He is also the chaplain of the Lee High School football team. He is also a church planting strategist for the Montgomery Baptist Association. Dewayne has written two books\, his first  2018 entitled Flatline 2 Ngauge and Flatline To Grace releasing this year. You can find his first release at Books-A-Million\, Barnes & Noble and Amazon. \nLearn more about Flatline Church on their website here: flatlinechurch.org
