DESCRIPTION:This week’s speaker is Colonel Chris Lacouture\,  Commander of the 908th Airlift Wing at Maxwell Air Force Base\, Alabama. He also commands the deployable Aeromedical Evacuation and Agile Combat Support units assigned to the 908th supporting National Command Authority taskings. Colonel Lacouture leads the Air Force’s MH-139 Formal Training Unit\, which will be flying the MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter. The helicopters replace the C-130 Hercules that had been stationed at Maxwell AFB but were relocated to another installation. Col Lacouture will discuss the  changes to the mission at Maxwell as a result of this new assigned aircraft. \nLearn more about Colonel Lacouture here. \nClub elections are December 7th. He will be discussing pre-litigation mediation. \nCarlton’s public service began nearly 2 decades ago from a simple desire to see his community grow and thrive. He is a lifelong resident of Montgomery\, Alabama. He is a product of the Montgomery Public School system\, attended and graduated Troy University in Montgomery before entering the legal field. \nCarlton has worked for Beasley\, Allen\, Crow\, Methvin\, Portis\, and Miles\, P.C. (Beasley Allen) in the firm’s Mass Torts division\, where he worked on landmark pharmaceutical claims including Vioxx\, Yaz\, Yasmin\, Ocella and many other drugs. His hard work was noted in the Beasley Allen report of November 2008. Also\, while at Beasley Allen\, Carlton founded Contract Paralegal Services\, LLC one of the first freelance paralegal services of its kind in Alabama. \nAfter his tenure with Beasley Allen\, he was commissioned by Julian McPhillips of McPhillips Shinbaum\, P.C. Carlton was mentioned on several occasions in McPhillips’ autobiography\, Civil Rights in My Bones when talking about his work on groundbreaking cases such as Tony Lewis\, Jr. vs. City of Montgomery\, Emerson Clayton vs. City of Alex City\, various EEOC claims\, and a group of federal cases involving Virginia College\, Trenholm College\, Auburn University\, and Alabama State University. \nCarlton has received many endorsements throughout his legal career before he began his career as a mediator. \nHe received the highest accommodations from Commissioner Gary Hattal of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service\, an independent agency of the United States government\, which provides mediation services to industries\, communities\, and government agencies worldwide. \nClub members: Please note that club officer elections are December 7th. SUMMARY:3 August Speaker: Michael Coleman\, CEO of the Montgomery Area Food Bank
DESCRIPTION:Michael Coleman is the CEO of the Montgomery Area Food Bank (MAFB)\, which is the largest food bank in Alabama\, serving 35 counties in Alabama where over 27 million pounds of food were distributed this past year. He was born and raised in Greenville\, Alabama and previously served 21 years in the United States Army as a communications officer. He retired from active duty in June 2005. \nMichael founded Hope Inspired Ministries\, in Montgomery\, AL\, in 2012\, and served seven years as its Executive Director. which is a non-profit dedicated to empowering men and women with barriers to employment. \nBefore coming to the Montgomery Area Food Bank\, Michael served as the Executive Director of the Jimmie Hale Mission in Birmingham\, AL\, which is an addiction recovery program focused on homeless men\, women\, and children. \nMichael is a proud Rotarian in the Montgomery Sunrise Club and a three-time Paul Harris awardee. He currently serves on the J.F. Ingram Community College Advisory Board and regularly speaks to community groups associated with combating the issues relating to poverty. \nHe does a weekly radio show called Mission Minded on the Tony Kurre Network\, where he discusses all issues relating to nonprofit and organizational leadership. Michael was recently selected as one of the Top 20 Most Dynamic CEOs of 2023 by The CEO Publication. \nMichael has a B.S. in Management and a M.S. in Christian Ministry. He has been married for 39 years and has two daughters and four grandchildren. \n  \nAbout the Montgomery Area Food Bank: \nThe Montgomery Area Food Bank (MAFB) was established in 1986 through the efforts of the local United Way Community Council and under the umbrella of the American Red Cross. At that time\, MAFB’s 10\,000-square-foot facility distributed roughly two million pounds of food annually throughout four counties in Alabama. The organization became a certified affiliate of Feeding America (previously known as America’s Second Harvest) in 1989. \nMAFB is one of 200 food banks across the nation that sources\, acquires\, and distributes healthy and nutritious food to those experiencing hunger and food insecurity. MAFB is contracted with Feeding America to combat hunger and food insecurity in 35 Alabama counties. They do this in partnership with four affiliated food banks in Auburn\, Tuscaloosa\, Dothan\, and Selma. However\, MAFB serves 12 of the 35 counties directly out of its facility in Montgomery. \nThe state of Alabama has over 700\,000 of its citizens who battle daily with hunger and food insecurity. In response\, last year MAFB distributed over 27 million pounds of food equating to over 22.4 million meals. We especially target our hunger initiatives toward veterans\, seniors\, children\, families\, and college students. \nToday\, MAFB maintains a staff of over 50 men and women who strive to cultivate a community where everyone has access to quality\, safe\, nutritious food and is committed to creating a healthy\, hunger-free environment for families\, seniors\, and children. MAFB is not only looking to address the devastating conditions of hunger and food insecurity\, but we also are working to begin initiatives that directly address the underlying causes of generational poverty. Through these efforts\, we will empower those who can be lifted up out of poverty and provide the resources needed for themselves and their families.

Swoope\, Ph.D.\, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Alabama State University. \nShe came to ASU from Edward Waters University where she served as associate provost of Academic Affairs. She is a chemist by profession with a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry from the University of California-Davis and a B.S. in Chemistry from Texas Southern University\, which is located in her hometown. She served at numerous schools where she earned a variety of academic accolades\, honors and fellowships\, especially in chemistry. Most notably\, her accomplishments include a research fellowship with the internationally acclaimed Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California\, as well as a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
